So you can imagine the frustration when one morning they woke up and it's all not working anymore. It would've been fine with other apps, but because how reliable Evernote was, many people built their whole daily and work processes around it. From one day to another every paying customer was automatically forced into buggy beta version of the product with half of the functionality cut out.
The frustration with Evernote that a lot of people have here is due to lack of trust in it, because of the way the company started treating its customers last year. Evernote can be good enough for that, if you haven't used it before and can't compare to how it used to be. For simple note taking there are multiple options as mentioned before.
You need internet to sync cards to your account, but it works offline afterwards. For learning words I would recommend something like Anki.
